Chris Miller has been teaching and coaching springboard diving since 1974. He started coaching high school divers at Tappan Zee High School in Orangeburg, N.Y. He also coached in, and managed, summer country club diving leagues in both Rockland and Westchester counties. For a short time, he coached men’s and women’s diving at Iona College, an NCAA Division I College in Bronxeville, NY. Along with coaching, he spent time as a recreation therapist in a children’s psychiatric hospital, a music therapist in a day school for troubled youth, and finally taught K-12 music in the public schools until retiring from teaching and coaching to hike the Pacific Crest Trail.
Chris moved to Bainbridge Island and came out of coaching retirement in 1989 at the encouragement of the parks department. He coached both Girls and Boys High School swim and dive programs until 2008, along with creating the parks department learn to dive program. Many of the divers have been lifeguards and instructors here at the pool. Harvard, Dartmouth, Cal Berkeley, and the Air Force and Naval Academies are just a few of the outstanding schools BIDC divers have attended and competed for.
Certifications and education; ARC WSI, ARC First Aid, ARC CPR, US Diving Safety, AAU Diving, Professional Diving Coaches Association, Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, K-12, NYSSFA Coaches training, and studies in Behavior Modification.
